One of my favorite examples of digital obsolescence on account of the physical medium used for data storage is the BBC Domesday Project. The project was a partnership between three computer companies and the BBC to mark the 900th anniversary of the original Domesday Book, an 11th century census of England.

Between June 2010 and December 2011, Sarah Kim from the School of Information, University of Texas at Austin interviewed 20 people about how they manage and preserve their digital documents and I asked about their long-term plans for their digital stuff. Although a decade old this BBC documentary on the history of computers is still fascinating. I have to admit that because my research focuses on the first desktop computers I got really happy watching part 8 and 9 in which the introduction of the desktop computer is explained. Small steps for a few but huge steps for mankind...

Personal Digital Archiving 2011 Conference was held in San Francisco on February 24-25 at the Internet Archive. The meeting aimed to share information and build a practitioner community for ensuring long term access to personal digital information.

DITZITEL was 25 jaar geleden de eerste breedband interactieve informatiedienst, een combinatie van telefoon en teletekst. In september 1986 werd tijdens de Firato in de RAI in Amsterdam de dienst door VNU Nieuwe Media geintroduceerd. Kijk hier naar de Brandpunt uitzending waar de uitvinder zelf toelicht hoe je met de telefoon en televisie een vliegticket kunt boeken en boodschappen laat thuisbezorgen.
